Tirana Art Week(end) was held between the 28th Nov – 8th Dec 2024. It has proven to be a resounding success, captivating audiences from Albania and beyond in the capital. This groundbreaking initiative has set a new standard for collaboration, artistic quality, creativity, and community building in the Albanian art scene, igniting excitement for its future potential.
The journey began in the spring 2023, when 10 representatives of Albania’s independent art scene traveled to Stockholm, invited by the ArtNexus programme, for a study visit, an intensive week of meeting different art initiatives in Sweden, of workshops and discussions. These sessions focused on building an association that could unite the art community, amplifying their collective voice and establishing stronger dialogue with policymakers. Inspired and equipped with new insights, the Albanian delegation continued their dialogue upon returning home, setting the stage for transformative developments.
By spring 2024, these efforts culminated in a pivotal moment—the Vlora Art Meeting. Held in the picturesque coastal city of Vlora, the conference brought together artists, cultural leaders, representatives from Albania’s Ministry of Culture, and Swedish experts. The discussions were both productive and inspiring, leading to the establishment of the Albanian Visual Arts Network (AVAN). This newly formed network quickly set to work, aiming to strengthen relationships both domestically and internationally while fostering a unified art community.
As AVAN’s first major initiative, Tirana Art Week launched in November 2024 and exceeded all expectations. Featuring over 12 venues and 20 activities across the city, the event showcased exhibitions, talks, and performances that were entirely free and open to the public. Spaces that once felt exclusive were transformed into welcoming hubs of cultural exchange, where audiences could immerse themselves in the vibrancy of Albania’s art scene.
The public response was overwhelming, prompting organizers to extend the weekend festivities into a full week. The celebration concluded on Sunday, December 8th, leaving a lasting impression on the city and its participants. Tirana Art Week not only demonstrated the ambition and determination of AVAN but also highlighted the power of collaboration to create innovative and inclusive cultural experiences.
